VIDEO - Jonas' Insane Idea - Stick Chair Day 2 addendum

After roughing my chair's seat by hand with an adze, I might try to come up with a different idea if I had to saddle a settee, which requires removing about five times as much wood. But, when Jonas first told me he wanted to saddle his bench with a plunging circular saw cut dragging it sideways across the wood, I thought he was crazy. Then he said he wanted to do it freehand, I thought I would have to call an ambulance.

Genius, or nuts?  You decide.
I have to say I was wrong. He makes it look easy and as natural a way to use a circular saw as could be. I'm not sure I would ever try it, but I might. If you try this, please be careful and take very light cuts.

  1. Your arms aren't sore after dishing this way.

  2. I'm honestly thinking that Jonas should host his own woodworking show right here in America. Firstly, his English is much better than Tommy Mac's, and secondly he is a better woodworker.

    1. Good idea. Plus, his sideburns will get ratings just because they are outrageous!

  3. That's innovation! Or, as Jensen Senior would have said a real "Gowboy" trick! Looking forward to seing the finished piece!

    1. Hi Jens, I think your brother is the John Wayne of 'cowboy' tricks now!

  4. That is great, I may have to try that someday. My dad turned a drum for a DIY sander using an eerily similar setup a few years ago. So long as it's a small bite it shouldn't be exciting at all, though a round toothed blade might be worth trying to find as opposed to the ATB I used making crown a while back (left deep scratches)

  5. I don't see anything wrong with that. Quite the contrary. I love his innovation. I certainly don't see anything unsafe about it. The cool thing about this craft is there are so many different ways to skin that cat!

    1. You are right, the way he did it it was perfectly safe. My problem was I couldn't imagine that it would work out so safe.
